Bringing the game of hockey and the thrill of competitive team sport to people with disabilities in Manitoba.
The Manitoba Power Wheelchair Hockey League started in 2003 in Winnipeg but didn’t become a registered association until 2007. It was spearheaded by Bill Muloin and began as an activity through SMD Childrens Leisure and Recreational Services. Unlike most other sports organizations, the MPWHL has some unique characteristics. Teams include players of all ages, genders, and ability ranges. Players have ranged in age from 10 to 85. Some players are very competitive while some play to have fun. Everyone is welcome.
Most importantly electric wheelchair hockey is fun! The league gives players the opportunity to be part of a team. Everyone is a valuable member and contributes to the team whether they're the player with the most goals or the player who has assistance driving the wheelchair. Unlike wheelchair basketball, where a player must have good upper body strength, power hockey players can choose to play by holding their sticks or attaching them to the side of their chairs.
The MPWHL is more than just a hockey league. Hockey is Canada's game and the MPWHL gives everyone the opportunity to participate in the Canadian hockey experience.
The MPWHL relies on sponsors, fundraising and donations in order to operate. We greatly appreciate all the support from our sponsors and are always looking for new partnerships. We would be very interested to discuss your financial budget and advertising with us in print or on our website. If you or your business are interested in sponsoring the MPWHA please contact us. WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS FOR THEIR PAST AND PRESENT SUPPORT.
